CHAPTER 2
It felt like hours had passed. My lungs had started to burn when we stopped at an old bus stop. The last time Iâd caught a bus here was to school. That seemed like a thousand years ago. I stood there in the cold and waited for a ride that would take us to the ship Marge mentioned. I had no idea the local school bus went to the docks, but I didnât want to be trapped on a ship with Marge. Still, it was preferable to that soul-sucking prison I called a job.
I decided to give in and enjoy the sense of freedom for the first time in years. The yellow bus arrived at 10:15 on the dot and we took two seats near the front as the door slid closed. The transport doesnât do anything special like fly, and I began to wonder if Marge had slipped something into my coffee. The blurring road as we traveled was relaxing, and gave me time to reflect on the insanity of the last hour.
I glanced at Marge and the other passengers. Had this whole bus full of people been brought here by their Fairy Godmothers? It would have taken magic to get me off work for two weeks with pay. Did I really kill my boss earlier? What if Marge hadnât arrived and brought him back? I lost my breath as we approached the docks. Then screamed in horror when the bus rolled off the wharf and plunged into the sea.
I stood up, waving my arms, while trying to decide what to do. The other passengers stared at me and calmly remain seated. This had to be the same bus I went to school on. I remembered those same stares from eighth grade. Suzie Clemance spilled strawberry milk over my uniform and my shirt was pink all day. Due to the summer heat, the milk went sour fast, and they called me âstinky pinky' until I graduated. I still didnât like strawberry-flavored anything. I dropped my arms when I realized there wasnât a drop of water leaking into the bus.
The stares continued, and I felt my face grow hot. Did forty-year-old women still blush? I check the seams by the door, expecting a trickle of water, but the bus is as airtight as a submarine, so I took my seat again. I pet Annie for comfort, more mine than hers, and kept a lookout for any leaks. When I accepted we were safe, I pressed my nose against the window to confirm there were fish swimming past.
The bus glides smoothly through the water, away from the dock, then dives sharply to enter an underwater cave. The headlights barely cut through the darkness and all I saw was a shimmer of rock. The tunnel was pitch black, and I had no idea how the driver navigated the watery depths. My stomach was still trying to recover from the change in atmosphere and even the headlights have gone dark. When we emerged on the other side of the cave, the light blinded me.
